Campaign Medals – Saudi Arabian Medal for the Liberation of Kuwait
Campaign or service medals are awarded to those who serve in specified campaigns or military operations. They recognise general military service in war (in contrast to Decorations which are issued for acts of heroism and bravery). In August 1990, Iraqi forces invaded and occupied Kuwait. In response, United States-led coalition forces launched a military assault in mid January 1991 which resulted in Kuwait’s liberation on 25 February 1991. New Zealand contributed RNZAF transport aircraft and tri-service medical teams. The government of Saudi Arabia awarded the Liberation of Kuwait Medal to British and Allied forces who served specifically during the liberation. The medal is only able to be worn on a restricted basis.
