CLAPHAM, William Henry
William Clapham was appointed an Acting Sub Lieutenant of the Wanganui Naval Artillery Volunteers (NAV) in February 1882, having previous experience as a mercantile marine. He was promoted to Captain in 1886 and became the division’s commander, holding the role until its disbandment in 1898. The Wanganui NAV was formed in 1881 in response to the confrontation at Parihaka.

Colonial Auxiliary Forces Officers’ Decoration
Established in 1899, as recognition for long and meritorious service as a part-time commissioned officer, in any of the organised military forces of the British Colonies, Dependencies and Protectorates. The ark green ribbon for this medal is described in the regulations accompanying the original Royal Warrant of Queen Victoria, is the same as that of the Volunteer Long Service Medal.
Colonial Auxiliary Forces Long Service Medal
Instituted by Queen Victoria in 1899, as a military long service award for part-time members of all ranks, in any of the organised military forces of the British Colonies, Dependencies and Protectorates.
The New Zealand Long and Efficient Service Medal
Instituted in 1887 as the New Zealand Volunteer Long and Efficient Service Medal. It was awarded to non-commissioned officers and soldiers of the New Zealand Volunteer and Permanent Militia Forces upon completion of 16 years continuous service. The ribbon was originally plain crimson, but two central white stripes were added in 1917.
