Surgeon Captain Corkill had a distinguished career in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve, the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy and the Royal New Zealand Navy as a surgeon, eventually rising to the rank of Surgeon Captain. He was studying medicine in the United Kingdom, before joining the British Army where he was wounded in action. After the war he completed his medical studies, returning to New Zealand he worked at Wellington Hospital, joining the Naval Volunteer Reserve, seeing overseas service on a number of occasions. On the outbreak of the Second World War he was mobilised, serving overseas on cruisers, later becoming Director of Naval Medical Services for New Zealand, attaining the rank of Surgeon Captain. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Naval Hospital at HMNZS Philomel. He was created an officer of the Order of the British Empire, and was demobilised at the conclusion of the war. |
