E J Watts was a commissioned gunner for the Royal Navy. During World War Two he was loaned to the New Zealand Division and served in HMS/HMNZS ACHILLES. He Received a Distinguished Service Cross for service during the Battle of the River Plate. During the battle action he was in the Direct Control Tower when it was hit, the hit resulted in the death of three of his compatriots.
