James Blackburn was born 26 July 1926. Blackburn served as a Radio Instructor on HMNZS ROYALIST from 3 April 1957 to 18 September 1958 on deployment to Malaya. The ship was deployed as part of the response to the Malayan Emergency – an attempt by the Malayan Communist Party to overthrow British administration of Malaya. Blackburn then returned to the area on HMNZS OTAGO in 1962 and 1966 to take part in the response to the Indonesian Confrontation. The Kronfrontasi was Indonesia’s political and armed opposition to the newly created Federation of Malaysia. For this service, Blackburn was awarded the Pingat Jasa Malaysia medal. Blackburn was also awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct medal in 1965 and the British Empire medal in 1968.
