Bully Martinson joined the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in 1921, serving all his time afloat in the cruisers Chatham, Dunedin, Diomede and Achilles. Specialising in signaling he attended specialist training courses with the Royal Navy in the United Kingdom. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal (DSM) for his actions in the Battle of the River Plate where he was seriously wounded, resulting in the amputation of one of his legs. He spent his remaining time in the Navy as a signals instructor at the shore establishment Philomel, before reluctantly accepting discharge in early 1945.
