Walter Doree joined the Royal Navy in 1906, and saw service in the First World War, later coming to New Zealand as a member of the ship's company of HMS Chatham, and decided to serve out his time qualifying for his pension in New Zealand, serving in the shore base, Philomel and cruiser Dunedin before he was discharged ashore in 1928. While serving in HMS Philomel he was awarded the Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. He re-enlisted during the Second World War, serving for a number of years ashore.
