After service in the Royal Navy, Chief Petty Officer Stoker Mechanician Jim Deane settled in New Zealand. He had previously been awarded the Naval Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, serving in HMS Pembroke between the two world wars. He served in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve in New Zealand and was mobilised in 1940, serving the entire war in the shore establishment HMS/HMNZS Philomel. He was awarded the British Empire Medal in the 1946 King's Birthday Honours List.
