COZENS, Alfred Charles Westbrooke
Alfred Cozens joined the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (RNVR) during the First World War for service in the Royal Navy Motor Boat Service. He trained as an officer in HMS Hermione and at Royal Naval College, Greenwich. In 1917 he was posted to ML142 attached to HMS Satellite, the base ship for patrol craft at North Shields. He served in this launch as a First Lieutenant and then as Commanding Officer from 1918. In May 1919 he was Mentioned in Despatches (MiD) for services in action with an enemy submarine. He returned to New Zealand after the war and was demobilised from the RNZVR.

The British War Medal
The British War Medal was instituted in 1919 to recognise the successful conclusion of the First World War (1914-1918). Its coverage was later extended to recognise service until 1920, recognising mine clearing operations at sea, and participation in operations in North and South Russia, the eastern Baltic, Siberia, the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea.
